How to fix the problem of File Explorer crashing when searching in Windows 10?

Delete Registry Keys:

  • Press Windows + R key to open
  • The Run Dialog box will appear
  • Type regedit and press OK.
  • Then head over to the following path:HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShell
  • Expand Shell and delete BagMRU and Bags by right-clicking on the folders and selecting Delete
  • In the end, restart the PC and see if the issue is fixed

Disable cloud storage extensions:

  • Press Windows Key + R key 
  • The RUN dialogue box will appear
  • Then type regedit and click OK
  • Now head over to the following path:  HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > CLSID{8E74D236-7F35-4720-B138-1FED0B85EA75} ShellFolder key
  • Right-click on the ShellFolder key, navigate to Permissions and choose advanced
  • Click on the Owner and choose change
  • Below your username, select Replace owner on sub containers and objects
  • Then, check Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this subject and click OK
  • Now check the full control box in the SellFolder window and click OK 
  • Now click on the Attributes key and set the value to 0
  • Lastly, save changes and restart your PC

Run an SFC scan:

  • Press Windows key + X key
  • The command prompt window will open click on the run an administrator.
  • Now type in the following command.

sfc/scannow

  • Then press Enter
  • Let the command run and then restart the PC
