FIX: Windows 10 won’t end task in Task Manager

Sometimes, Windows will give you the option to either close the program or End Now, or wait for it to respond. But the worst is if it glosses over with the gray screen and constantly rotating circle that indicates the program is not going anywhere anytime soon.

The worst point is that there are programs that can freeze without warning you, but if you want to fix the problem when Windows 10 will not end the task, there are ways to cope.

FIX: Windows 10 will not end the task

1. General improvements

  • Pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL and select out to end the task faster. However, it is also primary to know that not all processes can be stopped using Task Manager.
  • You can also reboot your PC if you do not see the Task Manager’s progress, or there is no response from Windows altogether.

2. Use the command taskkill

This involves utilizing the Command Prompt to kill certain processes, although complex to remain open whenever the program freezes or stops responding. To do this:

  • right-click on your desktop
  • select New
  • Choose Shortcut
  • > Enter the location for the shortcut
  • Paste command: taskkill / f / fi “status eq not responding”

  • Press Finish when you are done
  • Taskkill command to kill a process that is not responding or freeze, saying the order to forcibly kill a specific task and runs only on processes that meet the filter criteria (a text in quotes). In this way, only the process with the status of Not Responding be killed.

You can expedite this process using keyboard shortcuts. To do this:

  • Right-click your new shortcut
  • select properties
  • Under the Shortcut tab, click the Shortcut key box and assign custom shortcuts
  • Windows will add the CTRL + ALT automatically for each letter you press (you can change the CTRL + Shift if you want)
  • A command prompt window will launch, set Run to Minimized, so it does not turn on when you press the shortcut
