Full Fix: Windows Update Service not running

Full Fix: Windows Update Service not running error message appears when users try to update their computer using the built-in update function or check for updates using either the Settings app on Windows or Control Panel in the old version. The full message said: “Windows Update can not currently check for updates because the service is not running.”

As with other Windows update issues, they can usually be solved with some patience, and this problem usually does not require severe problem solving or restarting your computer. We have set up solution that have proven useful, so make sure you give it a try!

Solution: Restart the Windows Update Service

As this error message is quite clear (unlike most Windows errors), you may also try to restart the Windows Update service that seems to have stopped or broken. Along with that, you also have to delete a specific folder that will ensure proper reset of the service. Good luck!

  • Open the Run dialog utility by using a combination of the Windows Key + R on the keyboard (press simultaneously …) Type “services.msc” in the new bar without the quotes and click OK to open the Services tool.
  • An alternative way for the same job is to open the Control Panel by placing it in the Start menu. You can also search using the Start menu’s search button.
  • After the Control Panel opens, change the “View by” setting at the top right of the window for “Big or Small Icons” and locate the entries Administrative Tools. Click and find the shortcut service at the bottom by scrolling down. Click it to open as well.
  • Search Windows Update gives you problems in the list of services right-click and select Properties from the menu that shows up.
  • If the service starts (you can check that it is only next to the Service status message), you must stop at this time by clicking the Stop button in the middle of the window. If discontinued, let it rest until we proceed.

Now it is time to remove the folder that we have mentioned in the description of this method.

  1. Open the PCs on the newer versions of Windows or My Computer on the older, depending on the version of Windows installed.
  2. You can navigate by opening Windows Explorer interface by clicking the icon library or by opening the folder and click on this PC / My Computer in the navigation pane on the left side of the window.
  • And-click twice on the drive where your operating system is installed (Local Disk C by default) and try to find the Windows folder. If you cannot view the Windows folder when you open the disc, which is due to hidden files is disabled from the looks on your computer, and you will need to allow a view of them.
  1. Click on the “View” tab in the menu File Explorer with the disc into the open and click on “Hidden items” checkbox in the Show / hide section. File Explorer will display hidden files and will continue this choice until you change it again.
  2. Find the SoftwareDistribution folder in the Windows folder, right-click on it and select Delete from the context menu option.

Now it’s time to wrap this solution and head back to the service to start the Windows Update service

.

Navigate back to Services, right-click on the entry Windows Update, and select Properties. Ensure that the option under the Startup type menu in this service’s properties window is set to Automatic before you continue with other steps.

Confirm any dialog boxes that may appear when changing the startup type. Click on the Start button in the window before exiting.

Check to see if the problem is gone and if you can now update your Windows properly or not.
