V-Ray for 3ds Max is a Chaos plugin. It does not replace 3ds Max. Install Max first, then the official V-Ray build for that year. “V-Ray 3ds Max full” is not a second product. Chaos V-Ray for 3ds Max runs inside 3ds Max on Windows.

• Install 64-bit 3ds Max (2021–2027 for this Live train)
• Download V-Ray for 3ds Max from Chaos
• Run as administrator
• Open Max → set V-Ray as production renderer → sign in

A zip that replaces vray.dll or cgauth.dll is stolen licensing. From 7.x, Chaos also offers Cloud licensing. Seats live at my.chaos.com/licenses. Do not patch Program Files.
Solo / Premium / Enterprise still let you install SketchUp, Maya and the rest on the same plan. Those are separate installers.

If nothing saves, you picked SketchUp or Enscape. The Max installer is its own file.

What to do next

1. Quit 3ds Max.
2. Sign in at my.chaos.com.
3. Download V-Ray 7 for 3ds Max, official Windows x64 — not Preview unless you are testing.
4. Right-click → Run as administrator.
5. Tick every Max year you actually have (2021–2027).
6. Open Max. Render Setup → V-Ray.

Typical folder: C:\Users\You\Downloads.
Plugin files land under the 3ds Max root and Chaos Program Files.

Cosmos and Chaos Scans download after you sign in. A “complete material library” torrent is not the product.

Windows may warn you. Check the publisher.

• Publisher should read Chaos.
• SmartScreen can appear on a new installer. Use More info only if the signature matches.
• Do not turn off Defender to “activate.”
• Do not copy a vrlclient.xml from a chat group.

Distributed rendering uses IPv4 only. Current official builds default to DR2. DR1 stays on Stable builds. Backburner + DR2 had bugs on early 7.40 hotfixes — use the latest Live file.

Pick the right Chaos V-Ray for 3ds Max Windows file

Chaos’s current requirements list 3ds Max 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027. Max 2020 and earlier need an older V-Ray from your account. Do not drop a 7.40 installer on Max 2018 and expect a menu.

Trial is full-featured and includes Chaos support for that window. Education seats follow Chaos education rules. Prices for Solo / Premium / Enterprise live on chaos.com. Corona is a different Chaos renderer — do not mix the two installers expecting one licence file to cover both unless your plan says so.

Will it run on this PC?

Official floor for current V-Ray for 3ds Max:

3ds Max itself wants its own RAM and a certified GPU for the viewport. V-Ray production frames want cores (CPU) or VRAM (GPU). Forest Pack / Phoenix / heavy proxies are why 8 GB is a joke in production.

Already installed? Install the new 7.40.x over the previous 7.x. Sign in again if Cloud licensing asks.

Install, first run, and Render Setup

First run

1. Open a small Max scene.
2. Rendering → Render Setup → Production renderer = V-Ray.
3. Sign in.
4. Render a teapot before a city block.
5. Optional: Vantage in the viewport / Live Link; Veras from the VFB if your plan and policy allow AI.

Uninstall: Windows Settings → Apps → V-Ray for 3ds Max. Close Max first.

If it did not work

• No V-Ray in the renderer list — you installed for 2026 while running 2027, or 32-bit leftovers.
• CUDA / HIP error — old driver or unsupported GPU generation.
• DR / Backburner fail — update to current 7.40 hotfix; check IPv4.
• “Full” pack is 150 MB with a keygen — leave.

• Still frames and animation that survive client review
• CPU when the scene will not fit in VRAM; GPU when it will

Questions before you trust the installer

Is this the official file?
Yes if it came from chaos.com or my.chaos.com and the publisher is Chaos.

Do I need a separate installer for SketchUp?
Yes, if you work in SketchUp. Same Chaos plan, different file.

Is V-Ray free with 3ds Max?
No. Autodesk does not include V-Ray. Chaos sells the plugin.

Will it run without a GPU?
Yes. CPU engine is the fallback. GPU is faster when the scene fits.

Safe?
Official installer plus Chaos sign-in. The usual risk is fake “Max 2027 + V-Ray full” bundles.
