K-Lite Codec Pack is Codec Guide’s free Windows DirectShow bundle (LAV, MPC-HC, renderers). Official only: codecguide.com — latest news lists 19.9.6 (31 Aug 2026). Four flavours: Basic / Standard / Full / Mega. Most people want Standard. They print filename + size + MD5/SHA256 on each download page — if those differ, delete it. Softonic / “K-Lite Mega 2026 Full” ads are how toolbars arrive. This is not VLC (VLC is self-contained). Don’t stack two codec packs. Play only files you have the right to play.

Will it run on this PC?

Codec Guide: Windows 7 / 8.x / 10 / 11, 32- and 64-bit codecs in one installer. ~20–65 MB download. GPU for hardware decode / madVR. HDR: they tell you to use MPC-HC + MPC Video Renderer or madVR. Thumbnail handler needs Explorer restart.

Already installed? Run the new Standard/Full/Mega over it. You do not hunt a second “full.”

Install K-Lite Codec Pack, first play, and defaults

First run

1. Open MPC-HC.
2. One MKV you own.
3. Codec Tweak Tool only if something is broken.
4. File types: don’t steal every association if you prefer VLC.
5. Mega VFW codecs only if an editor asks.

Uninstall: Settings → Apps → K-Lite Codec Pack (their uninstaller is cleaner than deleting folders).

If it did not work

• Hash fail — delete.
• Black screen — renderer / GPU driver, not a crack.
• 12 MB KLCP_Unlocked — leave.

Why people still install official K-Lite

• LAV + MPC-HC in one wizard
• 19.9.6 still dated Aug 2026
