ChatGPT Classic is OpenAI’s previous official Windows desktop client. In July 2026 they shipped a new ChatGPT app (Chat + Work + Codex). The old app can stay installed and is labelled Classic. Official Windows path: chatgpt.com/download and the Microsoft Store / OpenAI Help (Using the ChatGPT Windows app). There is no ChatGPT_Classic_Unlocked.exe. Fake “Classic 2026 full” setups steal OpenAI passwords. You can skip the app and use chatgpt.com in a browser. This is not a local offline GPT. API keys belong in the OpenAI Platform, not a random EXE.

A 280 MB “Classic 2026.709 unlocked” from a software blog is how accounts get phished. Grey “Plus lifetime” keys are stolen subs.

If the EXE is 15 MB named ChatGPT_Classic_Setup, leave. Official packages are Store-signed MSIX (x64 / ARM64), not a random NSIS.

ChatGPT Free works on the web. Desktop features and models follow your plan (Free / Plus / Pro / Business / Enterprise). Cancel in chatgpt.com account settings. A $8 “Classic lifetime 2026” key is not OpenAI.

Will it run on this PC?

OpenAI Help: Windows 10 version 17763.0 or higher, x64 and ARM64. Internet required. Store or web installer. Companion window needs a working shortcut. This app does not run GPT on your GPU without their servers.

Already installed? In-app prompt for the new client; Classic can remain. You do not hunt a second “full.”

Install, first chat, and the account

First run

1. Open ChatGPT or ChatGPT Classic.
2. Sign in.
3. One test prompt.
4. Don’t send secrets you can’t afford logged.
5. API work stays on platform.openai.com.

Uninstall: Settings → Apps / Store.

If it did not work

• “Paid plan required” — use the web or upgrade.
• Fake login page — wrong installer.
• 20 MB GPT_Unlocked — leave.

Why people still install the official app

• Alt+Space companion
• Classic kept beside the new shell
• Store-signed

It will not replace a local model you host yourself.

Yes if it came from chatgpt.com/download or the Store listing by OpenAI.

Is Classic discontinued?
OpenAI said it still gets model/security updates; new agent features live in the new app.

Safe?
