4.0 nightlies sit beside stable. Use them only if you are testing. Keep 3.0.23 for daily use.

What to do next

1. Open VLC for Windows.
2. Download the installer VideoLAN offers (usually 64-bit).

• SmartScreen can appear on a new 3.0.x setup. Use More info only if the signature is VideoLAN.
• Do not turn off Defender to “install codecs.” VLC already has them.

Will it run on this PC?

VideoLAN: Windows XP SP3 through Windows 11. 3.0.23 improved ARM64 and still mentions XP. A few hundred MB of RAM and ~40–50 MB on disk is enough to install; 4K/8K wants a GPU and hardware decoding on (Preferences → Input/Codecs).

Install, first file, and defaults

First run

1. Open VLC.
2. Media → Open File.
3. If 4K stutters: hardware decoding Automatic.
4. Tools → Preferences → Interface for dark mode on current 3.0.23.

Uninstall: Settings → Apps.

If it did not work

• No picture — try another hardware-decode setting.
• DVD menus fail — region / disc, not a missing “Pro.”
• 15 MB VLC_Unlocked — leave.
