How to install Windows 7 from ISO?

Before installation, you need to prepare an installation disc (DVD) or bootable USB disk.

Why DVD/USB must boot?

DVD or USB disk must be bootable if you want a fresh installation on a system that already has no operating system installed. If DVD or USB media is not bootable, the first screen saying something like "press any key to start" will not display and the installation process will not start.

Installation Types

There are two types of installation:

Fresh Install Windows 7

A fresh and total installation. The partition (C: mostly) needs a format and erase all data to perform a fresh Win7 installation. The previous operating system or any data on that drive partition will be erased in format operation. A fresh installation will begin after format is complete.

Upgrade Windows 7

If you already have an old version of Windows (like Windows 98, Windows XP, or Windows Vista) you can upgrade to Windows 7. You might not need to format the older version and you can save your personal documents, pictures, and video. The previous operating system will be replaced in favor of fresh Windows 7.

How to create a bootable Windows 7 USB drive?

You need an ISO to USB creating tool for making Windows 7 bootable USB drives. Such tools extract the contents of ISO file to a DVD or USB flash disk. There are lots of ISO to USB tools but a few of these software is able to create bootable Windows media.

Most ISO to disk burn tools claim the best technology but we have picked only the best ISO tools for you. These are actually usable and easy to understand for users.

You are recommended to use any of the following tools:

Download Windows 7 ISO

You can get real Windows 7 files from Microsoft Development Network (MSDN). These files are the original ones and come in ISO format, which means they're ready to use as bootable discs.

But getting them directly from Microsoft on your Windows computer is not straightforward. You might have to use special tools, which can be a bit complicated.

However, once you have the ISO file, you don't need a Windows 7 DVD. Instead, you can use the ISO to create a bootable USB or DVD. Then, you can install Windows 7 from that USB or DVD onto your computer.

Windows 7 ISO Download (All Editions)

Updated: September 2026
Status: Original Microsoft install media • License required • Out of support since 14 January 2020

This page is the hub for original Windows 7 ISO files — Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate — in 32-bit and 64-bit where Microsoft shipped them.

It is not a free license. It is not a modified, preactivated, or “optimized” image. If a file’s SHA-1 does not match the official filename below, do not install it.

Read this before you download

Windows 7 reached end of support on 14 January 2020. Microsoft no longer publishes security updates for it. A PC running Windows 7 on the public internet in 2026 is a security problem, not a lifestyle choice.

Use these ISOs only for:

  • Reinstalling a licensed machine that must stay on Windows 7 for a specific app or instrument
  • A virtual machine or air-gapped lab
  • Recovering files from an old drive
  • Hardware that physically cannot run Windows 10 or 11

Do not use Windows 7 as a daily driver on a network.

Microsoft removed the public Windows 7 ISO download page in 2021. The files listed here are the original Service Pack 1 images Microsoft published through MSDN / Digital River. Copies are preserved on public archives. An ISO is install media. It does not give you a product key.

You haveYou can
A genuine Windows 7 product key for that editionDownload the matching ISO, verify the hash, install, and activate
No keyYou may install for a limited trial period. You still need a real key to activate. Buying a random “cheap key” online is not a substitute for a legitimate license
A Windows 10 / 11 PCInstall a current Windows release instead

Windowstan does not provide product keys, cracks, activators, or preactivated ISOs.

Which edition should you install?

Pick the edition that matches the key you already own. A Professional key will not activate Ultimate. An OEM key is often locked to the PC it shipped with.

EditionWho it was for64-bit?Max RAMWhat you actually get
StarterNetbooks, OEM onlyNo. 32-bit only2 GBBasic desktop. No Aero Glass, no wallpaper change, no Media Center, no domain join
Home BasicEmerging-market OEM32-bit typical8 GBSlightly more than Starter. Still no Aero Glass, no Media Center
Home PremiumHome PCsYes16 GBAero, Media Center, Homegroup, touch. The normal home edition
ProfessionalEnthusiasts and small officesYes192 GBEverything in Home Premium plus domain join, Remote Desktop host, EFS, offline files, XP Mode
EnterpriseVolume-license businesses onlyYes192 GBProfessional plus BitLocker, AppLocker, DirectAccess, BranchCache, multilingual UI. Not sold at retail
UltimateRetail “everything” SKUYes192 GBSame feature set as Enterprise, sold to individuals

Practical pick

  • Old family desktop, you have a Home Premium sticker → Home Premium
  • Office PC that must join a domain → Professional
  • You own an Ultimate key → Ultimate
  • You do not own a key and you need a daily PC → do not install Windows 7

Starter is the most limited edition, not the most complete. Enterprise is not “Pro with a different name.” Ultimate and Enterprise share features; they do not share keys.

Official English SP1 filenames and checksums

These are the May 2011 SP1 refresh images (the _u_ MSDN / Digital River set). They already include Service Pack 1. That is the set you should use unless you have a specific reason to use an older RTM disc.

SHA-1 values below are the documented Microsoft file hashes. After the download finishes, hash the file on your PC. If it does not match, delete the file.

Enterprise

Enterprise was a volume-license SKU. Use the official names:

  • 32-bit: en_windows_7_enterprise_with_sp1_x86_dvd_u_677710.iso
  • 64-bit: en_windows_7_enterprise_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677651.iso

Confirm the SHA-1 against files.rg-adguard.net (search the exact filename) before you install. Do not use a “fully updated + preactivated” Enterprise image. Those are modified.

How to read a filename

en_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677332.iso

  • en = English
  • ultimate = edition
  • sp1 = Service Pack 1 integrated
  • x64 or x86 = architecture
  • _u_ = May 2011 media refresh

If the file on disk is named windowstan_....iso or Win7_Ult_Crack.iso, rename-compare against the official name and hash. The name on disk does not matter. The hash does.

Where the files come from

Microsoft no longer hosts a public Windows 7 download form. The durable public copies are on the Internet Archive.

Recommended archive collections (original filenames, not renamed packs):

On any Archive.org item:

  1. Open the item page.
  2. Click SHOW ALL, or go to https://archive.org/download/IDENTIFIER/.
  3. Open IDENTIFIER_files.xml.
  4. Copy the file’s name, size, md5, and sha1.
  5. Compare that SHA-1 with the Microsoft filename in the table above.

A hash that exists on Archive.org only proves “this is the file the Archive stored.” Matching it to the Microsoft SHA-1 is what proves the image is untouched.

Edition pages on this site link the specific Archive.org file for that SKU.

Verify the ISO before you write a USB

Do this on the PC you downloaded to. Do not skip it.

Command Prompt (built into Windows):

certutil -hashfile "C:\Users\Public\Downloads\en_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677332.iso" SHA1

PowerShell:

Get-FileHash "C:\Users\Public\Downloads\en_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677332.iso" -Algorithm SHA1

Compare the output to the SHA-1 in the table, ignoring case. One different character means a corrupt or substituted file.

Also check:

  • File size is in the same ballpark as the official image (about 2.3–3.3 GB for SP1-U, larger for later escrow snapshots)
  • You downloaded the .iso, not an .exe installer that arrived next to it
  • Antivirus did not quarantine half the file mid-download

32-bit or 64-bit

Choose 64-bit ifChoose 32-bit if
The CPU is 64-bit (almost every PC sold after 2008)The CPU is truly 32-bit only
You want more than 4 GB of RAMYou are installing Starter (no 64-bit Starter exists)
You will run 64-bit appsA specific 32-bit-only driver leaves you no choice

A 64-bit Windows 7 install can run 32-bit programs. A 32-bit install cannot use more than ~3.2–3.5 GB of RAM, regardless of how much is in the machine.

To check a running Windows PC: Win + Pause → System type.

System requirements

Official minimums from Microsoft:

  • 1 GHz processor
  • 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB free disk (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics with WDDM 1.0 driver
  • DVD drive or an 8 GB USB stick

That is the 2009 bar. On 2020s hardware you will hit different problems:

  • USB 3.x ports — stock Windows 7 has no USB 3 host drivers. Keyboard and mouse may be dead in setup unless you slipstream drivers or use a USB 2 port.
  • NVMe SSDs — not supported out of the box. The installer may not see the disk.
  • TPM / Secure Boot / UEFI-only firmware — Windows 7 can install in UEFI + GPT with work, but many new boards expect Windows 10/11.
  • No SHA-2 support until you install KB4474419 and KB4490628. Without those two updates, later Windows Update packages and many signed drivers will not install.

If the machine is a current laptop, install a supported OS.

Create a bootable Windows 7 USB

Use Rufus. Download Rufus from rufus.ie only.

  1. Plug in an 8 GB or larger USB stick. Everything on it will be erased.
  2. Open Rufus.
  3. Device: the USB stick.
  4. Boot selection: the verified .iso.
  5. Image option: Standard Windows installation.
  6. Partition scheme:
    • MBR + BIOS (or UEFI-CSM) for most 2009–2014 PCs
    • GPT + UEFI only if that board boots Windows 7 in UEFI mode
  7. File system: NTFS (FAT32 cannot hold a 4+ GB install.wim without splitting).
  8. Start.

Microsoft’s old “Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool” still exists, but Rufus is the reliable tool in 2026.

To boot the USB: open the firmware boot menu (often F12, F10, Esc, or F8) and pick the stick. If the PC ignores it, disable Fast Boot / enable CSM / use a USB 2 port.

Clean install, short version

  1. Back up files. A clean install wipes the target partition.
  2. Boot the verified USB.
  3. Language → Install now.
  4. When Setup asks for a product key, enter the key that matches the ISO edition. If you need to finish setup first, you can continue and activate later — that does not make the install “free.”
  5. Accept the license.
  6. Custom (advanced) → select the Windows partition → Drive options → Format only if you intend to wipe that partition.
  7. Let Setup copy files and reboot.
  8. Create a local account. Windows 7 has no Microsoft-account requirement.
  9. Install chipset, storage, and network drivers from the PC maker, not from a “driver pack” website.
  10. Activate with the genuine key: Control Panel → System → Change product key.

Upgrade-in-place from Windows Vista is possible on paper. In 2026 a clean install is the only process worth doing.

After install: the updates that still matter

Windows Update for Windows 7 is a dead end for current security. If you must keep the machine running, do this offline, in order:

  1. Servicing stack update appropriate for SP1
  2. KB4490628 (SHA-2 code-signing support)
  3. KB4474419 (SHA-2 support for Windows 7)
  4. Convenience Rollup KB3125574 if you want the 2011–2016 patch pile in one package
  5. Stop. Do not chase random “Windows 7 SP2” downloads. Microsoft never shipped a Service Pack 2.

Then keep the PC off the internet, or behind a dedicated firewall with no inbound ports and no browser use.

What this page is not

  • Not an official Microsoft download server
  • Not a store selling Windows 7 licenses
  • Not a source of modified, slimmed, “Reloaded,” or preactivated images
  • Not advice to put Windows 7 on a machine that can run Windows 11

If a site offers “Windows 7 Ultimate preactivated + all updates + NVMe + USB 3,” that file is not the ISO in the tables above. Its hash will not match. Treat it as untrusted software.

FAQ

Is it legal to download a Windows 7 ISO?
Downloading original install media to reinstall a copy you licensed is the normal, intended use of an ISO. Redistributing modified images, keys, or cracks is not. The ISO is not a license.

Does Microsoft still give out Windows 7 ISOs?
No public form. The old software-download/windows7 page required a product key and was removed around 2021. Volume-license and historic MSDN subscribers had official channels. Everyone else is using archived original media plus a hash check.

Can I install without a product key?
Setup can continue without one. Windows 7 then runs as an unactivated install with a grace period and reduced personalization. That is not a free full license.

Which ISO is “the latest Windows 7”?
There is no current Windows 7. The last mainstream install media is Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (build 7601). Later “escrow” snapshots exist; they are not a new version of Windows. Prefer the official SP1-U filenames in the table, then apply the two SHA-2 updates if the PC must run.

Why did my hash not match?
Wrong edition, wrong language, wrong architecture, a truncated download, or a modified image. Download again from the Archive.org file that uses the official filename. Do not “repair” a mismatch by ignoring it.

Can I upgrade this install to Windows 10 for free?
Microsoft’s consumer upgrade offer from Windows 7 ended years ago. Do not expect a free digital entitlement in 2026.

Will Windows 7 run on a new PC?
Often no, or only after slipstreaming USB 3 and NVMe drivers. Buy or install a supported OS instead.

Do you host the files on this page?
This hub documents official names and hashes and points to the edition pages. Those pages link the corresponding Archive.org items. We do not alter the bytes.
