Microsoft is explicit: Word will usually still open. You take the security risk. There were no extended security updates after that date. .docx / .xlsx / .pptx from 2010 open in current Office. You do not need 2010 to keep the files.

CPU: 500 MHz (1 GHz for some Outlook features)
RAM: 256 MB minimum, 512 MB more realistic
Disk: about 3–3.5 GB
Display: 1024×768

XP, Vista, Windows 7 and 8.x are all out of support. Windows 10 support ended 14 October 2025. Office 2010 on any of those boxes is an unpatched suite on an unpatched or ageing system. Do not put it on a machine that handles mail or money.

32-bit was the default because of add-ins. 64-bit needed 64-bit Windows and no leftover 32-bit Office.

If you still have the disc

Insert the disc. Run SETUP.EXE if it does not auto-start.
Enter the product key.
Finish setup.
Open Word. There is no new update train.

Uninstall: Windows Settings → Apps, or Programs and Features on older Windows.

If it did not work

Setup missing — you only have a key card and Microsoft pulled the web installer.
Invalid key — already used, or a grey-market volume key.
64-bit setup blocked — 32-bit Office still installed.
You downloaded X17-….exe from a blog — treat it as untrusted.

Why anyone still looks for 2010

They still have the DVD and need Word on a spare box

What you do not get: patches, Microsoft help, Copilot, OneDrive as part of the suite, or a supported connection to current Microsoft 365 mail.
